About Shantou Founding Museum
Its subject is more specific than a general municipal museum: the displays connect the establishment of the port with subsequent urban history and everyday life.
The old central-city setting is part of its usefulness. After the galleries, look at the surrounding streets and the renovated post-office building opposite to place the port narrative within a real neighbourhood. This combination works best as a focused old-Shantou visit, giving context to the commercial architecture before continuing through the historic centre.
What to look for
- The displays explain Shantou’s establishment as a treaty port.
- Later urban and daily-life material follows the city beyond the initial opening.
