About Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport

Fuksas designed a double layer of metal and glass openings that filters daylight into the hall, with the pattern repeated in interior fittings. White branching ventilation structures add another sculptural element. These details can be appreciated while using the public terminal areas; departure concourses and the satellite building belong to the controlled passenger journey. Leave enough time for the actual gate rather than treating the large terminal as a compact attraction.

The airport was originally planned for a site near Baishizhou in Nanshan District, closer to the city center and within the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, but after further study it was decided to build in the outer suburbs instead, to avoid constraining the city's layout and to leave room for future expansion; the Baishizhou site was later used for the Window of the World, Happy Valley and Splendid China theme parks. Construction began at the end of 1988, with groundbreaking on 28 December, and the airport formally opened on 12 October 1991, with Premier Li Peng attending the opening ceremony; it was built in two and a half years, the fastest airport construction in China at the time.

The airport became an international airport on 16 May 1993, when China Southern's Shenzhen branch opened its first international route, to Singapore, and by 1996 it had become the fourth-largest airport in China. Because Huangtian (黄田) sounded similar to Huangquan (黄泉) in the Minnan dialect, Shenzhen Huangtian International Airport was renamed Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport on 18 September 2001. A new passenger terminal, Terminal 3, opened on 28 November 2013, and the three older terminals closed the day before.
