Setting and landscape
The city is a narrow strip about 81 kilometres long and under 11 kilometres wide at its narrowest, between Daya Bay (大亚湾) and Dapeng Bay (大鹏湾) to the east and Lingding Bay (伶仃洋) to the west. Coastal hills line the southeast, where Wutong Mountain (梧桐山) rises to about 944 metres; the western shore is flat alluvial plain and reclaimed land, and the Dapeng Peninsula (大鹏半岛) keeps volcanic relics and sea-cut coast. The mangroves of Shenzhen Bay Park (深圳湾公园) are a stopover for migrating birds.
History
People lived at Xiantouling (咸头岭) on Dapeng Bay some 7,000 years ago. Bao'an County was founded in 331 with its seat at Nantou (南头), and in 1573 the Ming made Nantou the seat of Xin'an County (新安县), which also covered Hong Kong until the treaties of 1842 to 1898 separated it. The name Shenzhen, first recorded in 1410, long meant only a market around today's Dongmen (东门); the place grew after the Kowloon–Canton Railway opened a station there in 1911. The special economic zone, approved in August 1980, was extended to the whole city in 2010.
What to see
Dapeng Fortress (大鹏所城), built in the Hongwu reign of the Ming against Japanese pirates, is a national key heritage site and the source of the city's nickname Pengcheng (鹏城). Nantou Old Town (南头古城) marks the old county seat, the Hehu (鹤湖新居) and Dawan (大万世居) walled villages were built by Hakka settlers in the Qing, and Chung Ying Street (中英街) at Sha Tau Kok (沙头角) is known as "one street, two systems". The Overseas Chinese Town (华侨城) resort, with the Window of the World (世界之窗), Splendid China (锦绣中华) and Happy Valley (欢乐谷) theme parks, has been a national 5A scenic area since 2007, and the Mission Hills (观澜湖) area in Longhua District (龙华区) since 2011. A seaside boardwalk runs from Yantian (盐田) port to Dameisha (大梅沙) beach.
Food and local products
Shajing oysters (沙井蚝) from Bao'an grow fat in beds where fresh and salt water meet; fattened by hanging culture, they are eaten steamed or deep-fried and also dried or made into oyster sauce. Poon choi (盆菜) layers a dozen or so ingredients, among them chicken, duck, fish, oysters, tofu skin, radish and pork, each fried, braised or stewed first, in one basin shared by the whole table as a sign of reunion. Guangming squab (光明乳鸽) and Nanshan lychees (南山荔枝) are other local specialities.
