Setting and landscape
The district's name joins the dou (斗) of a bailing scoop and the men (门) of a sea gate. Three delta channels, Modaomen, Jitimen (鸡啼门) and Hutiaomen (虎跳门), carry large volumes of river water through the district. Rainfall averages about 1,999 millimetres a year. The district government describes the landscape as hills, fields, rivers and sea wrapped around a broad sand-field water country (沙田水乡).
History and heritage
Descendants of Zhao Kuangmei (赵匡美), younger brother of Emperor Taizu of Song, settled in Doumen town (斗门镇). Their ancestral hall in Nanmen village (南门村), Luyi Hall (菉猗堂), was built in 1454 and is a provincial protected site; its gable walls are built of large oyster shells laid in rows, 65 centimetres thick, a technique once common in the delta of which few examples survive. Two local customs are on the national intangible-heritage list: the water wedding (水上婚嫁) and the trapping of mud fish (装泥鱼习俗). The first grassroots Communist Party branch in Zhuhai was set up at Xiaohaochong (小濠涌) in Doumen.
What to see
The district government lists the Ming and Qing old street of Doumen (斗门明清古街), Jiexia Zhuang (接霞庄), Jintai Temple (金台寺), Huangyang Mountain (黄杨山) and the Yu hot springs (御温泉) among its main places for folk culture and outdoor trips. Visitors come for dragon-boat races, sand-field folk songs (沙田民歌) and lion-dance contests. Jiexia Zhuang lies in Nanmen village, the same village as Luyi Hall, and two of its houses, Nos. 2 and 4, are recognised by the Zhuhai city government as historic buildings.
Food and local products
Doumen has been awarded the titles China's capital of sea bass, home of the ragworm (禾虫) and home of the yellow-sand clam (黄沙蚬). Baijiao sea bass (白蕉海鲈), from Baijiao town (白蕉镇) in the east of the district, is a national geographical-indication product; other specialties are double-shell crab (重壳蟹), Lianzhou ragworms (莲洲禾虫) and Hushan Jinchao pipa duck (虎山金巢琵琶鸭). Local snacks include kudzu root (粉葛), mugwort cakes (艾饼), salty tea (咸茶), dried-shrimp glutinous cakes (虾米糍) and Lianzhou mooncakes (莲洲月饼).
Getting oriented
Doumen lies close to Gaolan Port (高栏港) and Zhuhai airport. The Xianghai Bridge (香海大桥) links it to Xiangzhou District (香洲区) and the Huangmaohai Bridge (黄茅海大桥) to Jiangmen (江门); the Western Coastal, Gaolangang, Airport and Jiangmen–Zhuhai expressways cross the district.
