Jinwan District 金湾区

Setting and landscape

The district has about 571 square kilometres of land and a much larger sea area of roughly 3,007 square kilometres. In March 2012 the Gaolan Port Economic Zone (高栏港经济区) was raised to a national economic and technological development zone under the name Zhuhai Economic and Technological Development Zone (珠海经济技术开发区), and in December 2020 Jinwan District and that zone began to operate as one.

History

The district government lists the Baojingwan site (宝镜湾遗址), the Caotangwan site (草堂湾遗址) and the cliff inscriptions of Lingyan Cave (灵岩洞摩崖石刻) among its surviving remains. Jinwan produced Lin Weimin (林伟民), a well-known leader of China's early labour movement, and has an exhibition hall on him and that movement. The sites of crimes committed by the Japanese army on Sanzao Island (三灶岛) are kept as a place of patriotic education, and a hall is used to teach and show the Sanzao crane dance (三灶鹤舞).

What to see

Airshow China, the China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition (中国航展), is held in Jinwan. At the Zhuhai International Airshow Center (珠海国际航展中心), the Zhuhai Space Center (珠海太空中心) keeps a space-station display module and Long March rockets on permanent show. The Jinwan Arts Center (金湾艺术中心) stands on the central lake of the Aviation New Town (航空新城); Zaha Hadid Architects designed it to look like a butterfly from above, a bird at eye level and a sail close up. It opened in November 2023 with a grand theatre, a multi-purpose hall, an art gallery and a space called X Space.

Mutouchong Village (木头冲村) in Sanzao keeps rows of old stone houses and Lingnan-style buildings, with a winding white "crane path" several hundred metres long through the woods and a tunnel through to Mutouchong beach (木头冲沙滩). In Sanban village (三板村), Hongqi, the Hongqi 1970 Art District (红旗1970艺术区) occupies the Hongqi sugar mill (红旗糖厂), built in 1970, with a mill story hall and a brown-sugar workshop. Damenkou Wetland Park (大门口湿地公园), also in Sanzao, is a coastal wetland park rated a national AAA tourist attraction.
