About Guiyang Wenchang Pavilion

Its square lower storey changes to nine-sided upper levels, and the repeated roof corners give the building an unusual silhouette. Carved windows and painted structural details add smaller features to inspect where access permits. The surrounding old-city streets make this a compact architectural stop rather than a large monument complex.

The pavilion was first built in 1596, in the Wanli era (万历) of the Ming dynasty, as one of the 'nine gates and four pavilions' (九门四阁) of old Guiyang. It was repeatedly damaged and rebuilt, and during the Republic era served at times as a garrison post and a secret prison; after 1949 it was occupied by a school, a factory and residences until the municipal government funded repairs in 1983, reopening in 1988.

The pavilion stands within the moon-shaped enclosure of Wusheng Gate (武胜门), facing west against the city wall, with wing rooms and a facing hall enclosing a courtyard of about 1,200 square meters. Its three-story timber frame carries a nine-sided pyramidal roof with three eaves; the square lower level rises to two upper stories with unequal nine-sided plans, a form found in Guizhou only at one other site. Each level once held a different image: Kuixing (魁星) at the top, Wenchang Dijun (文昌帝君) in the middle and Wuanwang (武安王), Guan Yu (关羽), below.

Nine Qing-dynasty renovation steles, dated from 1692 to 1842, were rediscovered during the 1983 repairs and displayed in stele galleries along the courtyard. On 25 May 2006 the pavilion was listed, together with Jiaxiu Tower (甲秀楼), as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level (全国重点文物保护单位).
