Setting and landscape

Mount Limu (黎母山), Wuzhi Mountain (五指山), Baihualing (百花岭) and Baima Ridge (白马岭) lie within the county, in a belt of tropical monsoon forest. China.com.cn notes that the county sits at the source of three rivers, with a yearly mean temperature of 22.8°C, and that the Wanquan River (万泉河) rises on its southern slopes. Mount Limu is regarded as the sacred ancestral mountain of the Li people and is often wrapped in cloud.

History

Qiongzhong was a base of the Baisha Uprising (白沙起义) and holds the site of the first congress of the Qiongya Column (琼崖纵队). In autumn 1947 a column unit under Ma Baishan (马白山) set up a border base area around Mount Limu and Songtao (松涛). The Baisha Uprising Memorial Park (白沙起义纪念园) stands in Hongmao (红毛) town.

What to see

Limu Mountain National Forest Park (黎母山国家森林公园) takes in one of the better-preserved areas of primary tropical forest on Hainan, and the mountain is called the "heart of the island". The Baihualing Tropical Rainforest Cultural Tourism Area (百花岭热带雨林文化旅游区), in Yinggen (营根) town, combines rainforest, rock gorges, rafting and Li and Miao customs, and has a waterfall. Shihan village (什寒村) lies in a high basin between Mount Limu and Yingge Ridge (鹦哥岭) and is among the highest villages on the island. Li brocade (黎锦) and Miao embroidery are common in the county; Li textile techniques were moved to UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity at the 19th session of its intergovernmental committee.

Food and local products

Qiongzhong green oranges (琼中绿橙) stay green-skinned when ripe and are a Chinese geographical-indication product. Qiongzhong is one of Hainan's five coffee-growing areas and mainly grows Robusta; the Mushan coffee brand (母山咖啡) takes its name from Mount Limu. Local dishes include free-range Qiongzhong yellow cattle (琼中小黄牛), Wanling baked chicken (湾岭焗土鸡) made from small free-range birds, and the Li people's yellow rice (黄色饭), in which Shanlan upland rice (山兰米) is cooked with sliced wild herbs and served to honoured guests.
