About Ancient Lotus Pond

It began as a private garden and later served imperial visitors, with water occupying a substantial part of the grounds. Towers and pavilions such as Shuidong Tower, Zaoyong Tower and Wanhong Pavilion frame changing views across the pond. The garden is best read as a sequence of buildings, water and small pauses rather than a single lotus display; flowering conditions vary with season.

The garden was begun in the late Jin dynasty as the private garden of Qiao Weizhong (乔维忠), a deputy general serving under Zhang Rou (张柔), the marshal of the Baozhou area, and was then known as Xuexiang Garden (雪香园). It fell into disrepair after an earthquake struck Baoding in 1290, and was rebuilt in 1565 by the prefect Zhang Liewen (张烈文). During the Qianlong, Jiaqing and Guangxu reigns of the Qing dynasty it served as a temporary imperial palace (行宫) and was expanded and renovated.

The garden covers 24,000 square meters, of which water accounts for about one third, in Lianchi District (莲池区) of Baoding on Yuhua Road, beside the Zhili Governor's Office; the district takes its name from the garden itself, which is counted among the 'Eight Scenes of Baoding' (保定八景). It was listed as a Hebei provincial cultural relic protection unit (河北省文物保护单位) in July 1982, and in 2001 was included in the fifth batch of Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level (全国重点文物保护单位).
