About Daqing Museum
Its main themes are the Quaternary environment of Northeast China, ancient mammals and the region's early human communities. Mammoth and woolly-rhinoceros fossils give the natural-history galleries a distinctive focus, while archaeological objects connect changing environments with human settlement. Following those three themes in sequence makes the museum a useful introduction to the Songnen plain before visiting Daqing's separate industrial-history institutions.
The museum's predecessor, the Daqing Exhibition Hall (大庆展览馆), was established in 1964 and occupied several sites before a hall north of Daqing Children's Park opened in 1975. It was renamed Daqing Museum in 1998 and moved in 2008 into a new 18,700-square-meter building in Daqing's development zone, forming a complex there with the Daqing Opera House (大庆歌剧院) and Daqing Book Garden (大庆书苑). The State Administration of Cultural Heritage named it a national second-grade museum in 2009, and the China Museums Association raised it to national first-grade museum status in 2017.
The museum holds more than 200,000 specimens, fossils and cultural relics, including 48 first-grade, 386 second-grade and 1,167 third-grade relics, and is considered one of the museums worldwide with the most complete range of species among mammoth and woolly-rhinoceros fauna fossils.
