About Central

Statue Square provides an open setting for reading the commercial skyline, while Pottinger Street’s stepped surface leads into a denser pattern of small shops and steep lanes. Around Hollywood Road, Tai Kwun and PMQ reuse institutional and residential buildings as cultural spaces. Choose a small part of the district at a time: pedestrian bridges, escalators and street-level crossings make its levels as important as its distances.

The name Central derives from a nineteenth-century division of Victoria City's northern shore into 'four rings and nine sectors' (四环九约) used informally by the Chinese population; the colonial government's own zoning of the city into east, central and west districts covered the same area, and the Hong Kong government later adopted Central as the official place name.

The British landed on Hong Kong Island in January 1841, when a census recorded only about fifty people living in the area then known as Kwun Tai Lo (群大路), in what is now Central and Sheung Wan. Because the site lay close to the Kowloon peninsula, had a deep-water anchorage and hills behind it, the British established their first military base there and built several main roads. Land reclamation under Governor Des Voeux (德辅) between 1887 and 1891 later produced the Hong Kong Club, Statue Square and the former Legislative Council Building, now the Court of Final Appeal.

Central's skyscraper construction and bank headquarters peaked during the 1970s and 1980s, when it was Hong Kong's principal commercial and financial centre and many residents considered working there a mark of prestige. Persistently high office rents and limited land, despite repeated reclamation, later pushed businesses to expand into neighbouring Admiralty (金钟) and Sheung Wan (上环), and into Wan Chai North.

What to look for

  • Statue Square opens a view of the surrounding banking architecture.
  • Pottinger Street’s steps contrast with the elevated pedestrian network and modern towers.

Background & history

Central (Chinese: 中環), also known as Central District, is the central business district of Hong Kong. It is located in the northeastern corner of the Central and Western District, on the north shore of Hong Kong Island, across Victoria Harbour from Tsim Sha Tsui, the southernmost point of Kowloon Peninsula. The area was the heart of Victoria City, although that name is rarely used anymore. As the central business district of Hong Kong, it is the area where many multinational financial services corporations have their headquarters. Consulates of many countries are also located in this area, as is Government Hill, the site of the government headquarters until 2011. The area, with its proximity to Victoria Harbour, has served as the centre of trade and financial activities from the earliest days of the British colonial era in 1841, and continues to flourish and serve as the place of administration since the handover to China in 1997.
