About Central–Mid-Levels Escalator

It links the Queen’s Road Central area with Conduit Road, passing Cochrane Street, Shelley Street and the streets around SoHo. Shops and restaurants face the route at different levels, making the changing city elevation part of the view.

Use it as a series of short neighbourhood connections rather than a continuous ride to be completed without stopping. Hollywood Road and Staunton Street offer useful points to step off and look back at the surrounding buildings. The escalators operate in one direction at a time, so check their current direction before planning the return.

What to look for

  • Covered escalators and inclined walkways reveal the steep rise from Central to Mid-Levels.
  • Street-level exits open onto the different urban scales of Cochrane Street, Hollywood Road and SoHo.

Background & history

The Central–Mid-Levels escalator and walkway system in Hong Kong is the second longest outdoor covered escalator system in the world, after the Wushan Goddess Escalator in Chongqing, China. The system covers over 800 m (2,600 ft) in distance and traverses an elevation of over 135 m (443 ft) from bottom to top. It opened in 1993 to provide an improved link between Central and the Mid-Levels on Hong Kong Island. As part of ongoing renewal works, the escalators at the top of the system between Robinson Road and Conduit Road were replaced and returned to service on 11 July 2018. Three refurbished escalators between Mosque Street and Robinson Road followed in early 2019, while two replacement escalators between Caine Road and Elgin Street opened in June 2019. Apart from serving as a mode of transport, the system is also a tourist attraction and is lined with restaurants, bars, and shops.
