About Hongmei Park
Its two strongest historic landmarks are Hongmei Pavilion and Wenbi Pagoda, whose contrasting forms punctuate the softer waterside landscape. Begin with the pavilion, cross the garden setting and use the pagoda as the final architectural focus. The open park provides a different experience from entering a religious compound; access to the interiors or upper levels of individual landmarks should be checked separately.
Hongmei Park was established in 1958 and formally opened to the public in 1960, built in Tianning District of Changzhou near Tianning Temple. It took its name from Hongmei Pavilion (红梅阁), the park's noted ancient building; the pavilion dates from between the Tang and Song dynasties, and the structure standing today is a Qing dynasty reconstruction.
The park covers 37 hectares of undulating ground threaded with rivers and lakes, combining gardens with a lake. Alongside Hongmei Pavilion stands Wenbi Tower; both are listed as key cultural relics protection units. Other structures include Banshan Pavilion, Jiasha Tower and Bingmei Stone, and a stone said to be the remains of an ice age stands opposite Hongmei Pavilion. In December 2007 the park was awarded the title of national AAAA-level scenic spot.
