About Taoxichuan Ceramic Art Avenue
Taoxichuan Ceramic Art Avenue (陶溪川文创街区) is a cultural and creative district in Zhushan District (珠山区), Jingdezhen (景德镇), built around the former Yuzhou Porcelain Factory (宇宙瓷厂).
The Jingdezhen city government places the district at 150 Xinchang West Road (新厂西路), between Tongbin Road (童宾路) on the west and Chaoyang Road (朝阳路) on the north. Its first phase uses the old Yuzhou factory as its core and was set up to protect and reuse the city's ceramic industrial heritage. The factory's sawtooth-roofed workshops, tall chimneys, water tower and coal-fired kilns have been kept, together with old slogans on the walls. It is a national 4A tourist attraction, and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism lists it among the 2015 key national projects for distinctive cultural industries.
The Jingdezhen Ceramic Industrial Heritage Museum (景德镇陶瓷工业遗产博物馆) follows the city's porcelain industry from 1904 to 2010 in four sections, from handicraft workshops and private firms to state porcelain factories and their restructuring. Tools, machinery, kilns, production processes and finished wares are shown alongside oral histories from 500 workers and the personnel records of 69,000 porcelain workers. In November 2017 the conversion of the factory into the museum received a UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation in the New Design in Heritage Contexts category; the design follows a principle of minimal intervention and sets modern materials against the factory's original brickwork. It is also on the first national industrial heritage list of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
The district's art museum has eight exhibition halls and a lecture hall, with 6,000 m² of display space that includes an 81-metre former tunnel kiln preserved as an installation. The Yi Space (邑空间) youth enterprise hub runs a creative market, and the first two editions of its Spring and Autumn Fair (春秋大集) brought together artists from more than 50 countries and makers from 30 art schools. Taogongshu (陶公塾) trains young people from China and abroad in pottery, including throwing on the wheel.
