About Xiannü Lake
Flooded valleys create a varied shoreline: Wulong Lake contains many bays and islands, while Zhongshan Gorge narrows the water between hills. A boat-based visit reveals that changing shape more clearly than a single shoreline stop. Select a sailing route by its actual destinations; the islands and named lake sections are spread across a substantial reservoir.
Xiannü Lake, also called Jiangkou Reservoir (江口水库), is an artificial lake on the middle Yuan River (袁河), built between 1958 and 1970 to store and control the river; construction flooded 78,000 mu of farmland and relocated 35,800 people. It was named Xiannü Lake in 1994, after a story of a feather-robed maiden in Gan Bao's Soushen ji (搜神记), and the name came into official use in 1995.
The reservoir has a water area of about 50 square kilometers, a storage capacity of about 890 million cubic meters and an average depth of 12 meters, making it one of Jiangxi's four major reservoirs. Its scenic area has three parts: Wulong Lake (舞龙湖) in the east, with many bays and islands; Zhongshan Gorge (钟山峡), a canyon landscape, in the center; and Lingyang Lake (铃阳湖), an expanse of open water, in the west, together holding 97 islands over 1500 square meters.
The lake mainly serves power generation, flood control and irrigation, along with water supply, aquaculture and tourism, and is a centralized drinking-water source for Xinyu city. It was designated a provincial key scenic area (省级重点风景名胜区) in 1995 and a national key scenic area (国家重点风景名胜区) in 2002, and is rated a national AAAA-level tourist attraction (国家AAAA级景区).
