About Longtan Mountain Park

Its so-called water prison is understood as a storage reservoir, while the dry prison is interpreted as a storage pit rather than simply a dungeon. These features help explain how a defended hill could sustain its occupants. Nantianmen supplies an elevated city view, and the paths between archaeological remains and woodland make the mountain more than a summit-only outing.

Longtan Mountain is part of the Laoye Ridge (老爷岭) range, on the east bank of the Songhua River (松花江) northeast of Jilin city; higher around its rim and lower in the middle, in a shape likened to a recumbent dragon, with its main peak, Nantianmen (南天门), rising to 338.3 meters.

In 1948 the area became a deer farm; after it relocated in 1954, vegetation was restored and the site opened as Longtan Mountain Park in 1957. The fortress was designated a Jilin provincial cultural heritage site in 1961 and listed as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level (全国重点文物保护单位) in 2006. The park underwent a renovation between 2011 and 2012.
