About Laohutan Ocean Park
The Polar Aquarium and Coral Aquarium are the principal marine themes, while Bird Forest provides a different setting away from the tanks. Despite the English name, this should be planned as an ocean-park visit rather than a long beach day. The separate attractions and their programmes need checking individually, especially if a performance is the main reason for visiting.
The park originated as Laohutan Park (老虎滩公园), begun in 1959 as a walking scenic area beside the sea that later developed into a municipal-level coastal park; a floating pier built in 1980 on its eastern shore introduced boat excursions. The adjoining Xiuyue Villa Park (秀月山庄公园), begun in 1984 and covering 539.4 hectares, bordered Laohutan Park to its east and Fujiazhuang Park (傅家庄公园) to its west, and merged into it in 1989.
The combined park was renamed Dalian Hu Tan Le Yuan (大连虎滩乐园) in 1991 and formally reopened in May 1992. On 8 August 2002 it took its current name, developed jointly by a Singapore petroleum investor, the Dalian Haichang Group (大连海昌集团) and Dalian Hu Tan Le Yuan, and at the time became the world's largest polar ocean animal hall; it is designated a national 5A tourist attraction (国家5A级旅游景区).
