About Zhongshan Square (Dalian)

The surrounding façades record the city's changing administrations and commercial institutions. Former bank, hotel and government buildings use several European architectural styles, but many remain working premises. The most useful visit is an exterior circuit that compares their forms and historical functions, using the central square to understand how the street plan ties them together.

The square was built by Imperial Russia in 1899; the city's first mayor, Sakharov, named it Nikolayevskaya Square (尼古拉耶夫广场). After Japan occupied Dalian the square was renamed Ohiroba (大广场), and after 1945 it was renamed again as Zhongshan Square in honor of the Chinese revolutionary Sun Zhongshan (孙中山, Sun Yat-sen). Ten landmark buildings were completed around the square between 1908 and 1935, in classical, Gothic and Renaissance styles.

In 2001 the State Council listed the 'Dalian Zhongshan Square Modern Architectural Complex' (大连中山广场近代建筑群) as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level, covering three buildings on the square: the former Dalian Civil Affairs Office (原大连民政署), the former Bank of Joseon Dalian branch (原朝鲜银行大连支店) and the former Yamato Hotel (原大和旅舍). Of the square's other seven buildings, the former British consulate has since been demolished; five more were later listed as Liaoning provincial cultural-relic protection units.
