About Zhang Xueliang Former Residence

The Daqing Building served as the family's office, while the Xiaoqing Building adds another scale of domestic architecture. The contrast between these buildings is the clearest way to understand how the residence expanded as the Zhang family's power grew. Current interpretation centres on Zhang Xueliang, so older guidebooks may use different museum names and exhibition descriptions.

The residence began as the mansion of the Liaoshen circuit intendant Rong Hou (荣厚). Zhang Zuolin (张作霖) bought the property in 1912 and in 1914 demolished the existing buildings to build a three-entry courtyard house, adding a three-story Roman-style blue-brick building, the Daqing Building (大青楼), to its east in 1922. In 1932 the Manchukuo authorities established the National Fengtian Library (国立奉天图书馆) here, drawing in collections from several Northeast institutions. In October 1988 the site was reorganized as the preparatory office of the Liaoning Museum of Modern History and the Zhang Xueliang (张学良) Former Residence Exhibition Hall, opening to visitors for the first time; a 1992 relocation moved remaining resident households out of the east courtyard.

The complex is arranged around a central courtyard flanked by east and west courtyards, covering 29,146 square meters with a total floor area of 27,570 square meters. The central courtyard is a traditional three-entry siheyuan; the east courtyard also contains the smaller Xiaoqing Building (小青楼). The west courtyard is a cluster of red-brick buildings, including seven tile-roofed rooms that once served as the guard battalion headquarters. The site is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction (国家AAAA级旅游景区).
