About Beijing Zoo

The panda complex is a natural starting point for visitors focused on Chinese wildlife, while the wider grounds include separate areas for primates, birds, large mammals, and other groups. Beijing Aquarium is within the wider zoological park setting but is a distinct visit to plan. Choose a manageable set of exhibits and include the garden spaces between them; attempting every enclosure can turn the visit into a long sequence of transfers.

The zoo's grounds originally held an imperial manor during the Ming dynasty, later part of the estate of the Qing general Fuk'anggan, before the Imperial Ministry for Agriculture, Industry, and Commerce established an experimental farm there in 1906; its small menagerie is considered the earliest public zoo in China. The institution passed through several names after 1911, including periods under Japanese occupation when wartime hardship left most of its animals dead. It bred the world's first artificially inseminated giant panda on 8 September 1978, and in 1990 built a giant panda hall, as a project for the Asian Games, later named one of that year's 'Beijing New Ten Great Buildings' (北京新十大建筑).

Changguan Lou (畅观楼), within the grounds, was built in 1908 as a temporary imperial lodge for Empress Dowager Cixi's river journeys to the Summer Palace; a two-story brick-and-timber building in a European Baroque style, with a deep surrounding corridor, red-brick walls with carved brick ornament, Ionic columns, and a curved gable topped with a spherical ornament. It was completed only shortly before Cixi and the Guangxu Emperor both died, and so was never actually used for its intended purpose.

What to look for

  • Panda complex: begin with the exhibit most closely associated with the zoo’s Chinese wildlife collection.
  • Historic garden grounds: notice the lakes, pavilions, and older buildings between the animal areas.
  • Bird and primate areas: choose a second animal group from the current zoo map rather than crossing the grounds repeatedly.

  • If your main destination is Beijing Aquarium, check its own entrance and admission arrangements rather than assuming the standard zoo visit covers it.
General visit reminders
