History

Today's district was formed on 1 July 2010, when the old Xicheng and Xuanwu (宣武区) districts were merged. Xuanwu brought eight subdistricts, among them Dashilan (大栅栏), Tianqiao (天桥), Niujie (牛街) and Taoranting (陶然亭). Earlier, in September 1987, the Madian (马甸) area was moved in from Chaoyang.

What to see

Around Shichahai (什刹海), a route promoted by the district runs through Yandai Xiejie (烟袋斜街), a lane of small shops, paper-cutting and sugar-blowing stalls, over Yinding Bridge (银锭桥) and Desheng Bridge (德胜桥), and along Houhai to Prince Gong Mansion (恭王府), which it calls Beijing's grandest house. A cycling route links the Guo Shoujing Memorial Hall (郭守敬纪念馆), Wanning Bridge (万宁桥), the White Pagoda Temple (白塔寺), the Temple of the Moon (月坛), the Capital Museum (首都博物馆) and Tianning Temple (天宁寺) with its Liao pagoda. It passes the Jicheng Memorial Column (蓟城纪念柱) and the capital-founding memorial gate in Jinzhongdu Park (金中都公园) and ends at the Xiannongtan (先农坛) altar.

Other names in the district include Beihai Park (北海公园), Guangji Temple (广济寺), the White Cloud Temple (白云观), Financial Street (金融街) and Liulichang (琉璃厂), an antiques street. Wikipedia lists Fayuan Temple (法源寺) as the oldest surviving Buddhist temple inside the city.

Local products and crafts

The district government counts time-honoured brands (老字号) among its assets. Neiliansheng (内联升), founded in 1853, takes its name from the imperial court and from the wish that officials wearing its boots would rise in rank; its hand-stitched cloth shoes take close to a hundred steps and at least 2,100 stitches a pair, and the technique entered the national intangible heritage list in 2008. Ruifuxiang (瑞蚨祥), founded in 1862, sells silk and made-to-measure Chinese clothing; it supplied the cloth for the first national flag raised on 1 October 1949, and its hand tailoring has been on Beijing's intangible heritage list since 2007.

  • Capital Museum 首都博物馆: City museum on the same route, promoted with the line 'enter a museum, read a city'.
