About National Centre for the Performing Arts

Its operator identifies four principal auditoriums: the Opera House, Concert Hall, Theatre and Multi-functional Theatre. The Opera House's movable stage and orchestra pit support large productions, while the smaller hall serves chamber music, recitals and contemporary performance. Choose between an architectural visit and a particular performance when planning; a visit to the public areas does not imply that all auditoriums or backstage machinery can be inspected.

The centre was first proposed in 1958 as one of ten major buildings marking the tenth anniversary of the People's Republic, with Tsinghua University producing a design and a site chosen west of the Great Hall of the People, but construction was shelved for decades. It was revived after a 1996 Communist Party decision to build major cultural facilities, and in July 1999 the design by the French architect Paul Andreu was adopted. Construction ran from December 2001 to September 2007, opening formally that December at a cost of about 2.6884 billion yuan.

The centre covers 118,930 square meters with a total floor area of 149,520 square meters. Its exterior is a semi-ellipsoidal steel shell measuring 212.20 m along its east-west axis and 143.64 m north-south, standing 46.285 m high with foundations reaching 32.5 m deep and a roof faced in titanium panels. An artificial lake surrounds the shell, and every passage and entrance lies below its surface. Because its height could not exceed the Great Hall of the People, about sixty percent of the building's area lies underground, extending ten stories below grade above an ancient channel of the Yongding River. The complex seats 5,366 people in total.
