About Shougang Park

No. 3 Blast Furnace makes the scale of the former production site visible, while the High Line turns old industrial connections into an elevated public route. Big Air Shougang and Qunming Lake add the Winter Olympic layer. Choose an industrial-history or sports-and-lakeside circuit rather than trying to cover every cluster; the park’s separate furnaces, museums, and elevated areas have their own access conditions.

Shougang Park occupies the former Capital Iron and Steel Factory (首都钢铁厂) in Shijingshan, whose main steel production line closed on 13 January 2011. Conversion planning followed, and in October 2013 renovation began on the Xishi Silos (西十筒仓) at the plant's northern end, the first project of the park's construction. The steelworks' former East Gate, built in 1992, was demolished in 2015, its glazed tiles and wooden beams numbered and preserved.

After Beijing won its bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics in 2015, its organizing committee chose the Xishi Silo area for its offices in 2016. In 2017 the State General Administration of Sport and the Capital Steel Corporation agreed to convert disused factory buildings into winter-sports venues; the former power plant's boiler and coal facilities became curling, figure skating, speed skating and ice hockey venues by June 2018, while the Shougang Ski Big Air (首钢滑雪大跳台) was built between December 2018 and October 2019.

In 2021, Shougang Park became the venue for the China International Fair for Trade in Services, with 15 exhibition halls. In 2024 its No. 1 Blast Furnace was converted into the SoReal science-fiction park, while its No. 4 Blast Furnace and attached boiler house became the Shougang International Convention and Exhibition Center, with the furnace core preserved and meeting rooms arranged around it.

What to look for

  • High Line and lake setting: compare elevated industrial corridors with the ground-level waterside landscape.
  • Big Air Shougang: see the winter-sports structure against the former steelworks setting.
