About Jinyun Mountain
The visitor area combines wooded paths, peaks such as Shizi and Xianglu, and the long-established Jinyun Temple. A route beginning at the temple and climbing towards Shizi Peak makes the relationship between religious settlement and mountain terrain clear. The larger nature reserve extends far beyond the visitor paths, so keep the outing within signed access areas rather than treating the whole protected mountain as open walking ground.
Jinyun Mountain is regarded as a Daoist mountain; according to local tradition, the Jinyun and Gaoxin clans came here in the time of the Yellow Emperor to guard against evil spirits, and the Yellow Emperor is said to have refined elixirs on the mountain. It is also a Buddhist site in eastern Sichuan: Jinyun Temple (缙云寺), below Shizi Peak, was first built in the first year of the Jingping era (景平) of the Liu Song dynasty, in 423.
In 1982 Jinyun Mountain was listed as a National Key Scenic Area (国家重点风景名胜区) together with Beiwenquan (北温泉) and Hechuan's Diaoyucheng (钓鱼城), and it is also designated a National Nature Reserve (全国自然保护区). The mountain is formed of nine peaks; the highest, Yujian Peak (玉尖峰), reaches 1,050 meters, while Shizi Peak (狮子峰), known for its steep terrain, rises to 980 meters. Its climate is mild with abundant rainfall, its soil is classified as Jinyun yellow soil (缙云黄壤), and more than 1,700 subtropical plant species grow within the reserve.
