Setting and landscape
The district government sums up the landscape as "one river, seven tributaries, six mountains and five valleys": its natural assets include Jinyun Mountain, the Huaying Mountains (华蓥山), the Jialing and the Yulin River (御临河), Jindao Gorge (金刀峡) and the Beiwenquan (北温泉) and Tongjing (统景温泉) hot springs. Three of the ancient Twelve Views of Ba-Yu are here: the clouds over the Jinyun ridge, the gibbons of the Tongjing gorge and snow on Huaying. The climate is humid subtropical monsoon, with warm winters and early springs.
The 2025 boundary change moved Dawan (大湾镇), Tongjing (统景镇), Dasheng (大盛镇), Xinglong (兴隆镇) and Cizhu (茨竹镇) into Beibei from Yubei (渝北区), while Shuitu (水土街道), Fuxing (复兴街道), Caijiagang (蔡家岗街道), Shijialiang (施家梁镇) and Tongjiaxi (童家溪镇) went to Liangjiang New Area.
History
In 1923 a gorge defence office was set up for the Little Three Gorges of the Jialing, where Jiangbei, Ba, Bishan and Hechuan counties met. The entrepreneur Lu Zuofu (卢作孚), founder of the Minsheng shipping company, took charge of it in February 1927 and began a rural reconstruction movement in the gorges; in 1934 he completed the Beichuan Railway (北川铁路). The area became the Jialing Three Gorges Rural Reconstruction Experimental Zone in 1936 and, as the Beibei Administration Bureau, a full county-level unit in 1942.
During the war against Japan, Beibei served as a relocation area for the wartime capital, and many well-known figures moved here, among them Lin Yutang (林语堂) and Liang Shiqiu (梁实秋). Three groups of buildings are national protected sites: the former Western China Academy of Sciences (中国西部科学院旧址), the Jialing Three Gorges rural reconstruction sites including the old gorge defence office, and the former Sino-Tibetan Buddhist Institute (世界佛学苑汉藏教理院旧址).
What to see
The district government counts more than a hundred historic and wartime sites, among them the former Jinyun Mountain office of the Southwest Bureau of the Communist Party, the Wang Pu Martyrs' Cemetery (王朴烈士陵园), the Lu Zuofu Memorial Hall (卢作孚纪念馆) and the former National Fudan University (国立复旦大学旧址). Its nine A-level scenic areas include the Chongqing Natural History Museum (重庆自然博物馆) and the Tongjing hot-spring scenic area. Other historic sites include Yashe (雅舍), the former home of Liang Shiqiu, the former homes of Lao She (老舍) and Liang Shuming (梁漱溟), and the tomb of General Zhang Zizhong (张自忠).
