About Crescent Lake · Mingsha Mountain dunes
The contrast between water, vegetation and bare sand is the main attraction, with the outline changing as you move between the lakeside and the designated dune viewpoints. Water conservation has become part of the site’s modern story. Allow time to see the basin from more than one angle instead of treating a climb or a commercial activity as the whole visit.
The lake was formerly known as Wowa Pond (渥洼池) and Shajing (沙井), and also called Yaoquan (药泉). It has been counted among the Eight Sights of Dunhuang (敦煌八景) since the Han dynasty and took its present name in the Qing dynasty. Measurements in 1960 recorded an average depth of 4 to 5 metres and a maximum of 7.5 metres, followed by declining water levels over the next forty years.
Experts at the Gansu Institute of Geological Environment Monitoring (甘肃省地质环境监测院) designed an emergency seepage-replenishment plan. A Dunhuang emergency project partly entered service in early March 2008, after which the average water level rose by 30 centimetres from around one metre. Government efforts to refill the lake had begun in 2006. The lake also forms part of Dunhuang Yardang National Geopark, recognised by UNESCO in 2015.
