About Foshan Ancestral Temple
The main ancestral temple is dedicated to the Northern Emperor, known as Beidi or Xuanwu. Its courtyards and halls provide the historical setting for a complex that also presents Foshan’s folk culture.
The Huang Feihong and Ip Man halls are separate parts of the visit, helping connect the old religious centre with the city’s more recent cultural identity. Follow the main temple first, then use the memorial halls to change the pace. Lion dance, martial arts and opera are associated with the site, but performance availability should be checked against the current programme.
What to look for
- The main temple’s halls are dedicated to the Northern Emperor.
- Huang Feihong Memorial Hall and Ip Man Hall present two Foshan martial-arts figures.
- The Confucius Temple adds a separate educational and ritual tradition to the complex.
