About Hailing Island
Dajiao Bay provides a developed beachfront, while the boats and working quays around Zhapo reveal another use of the same coast. The Maritime Silk Road Museum adds the recovered Nanhai I shipwreck as a cultural stop. Choose a beach-and-port area before adding the museum, since the island’s separate bays and attractions require planned transfers rather than one continuous beach walk.
Hailing Island was originally called Luozhou (螺洲), a name said to derive from its shape, resembling a horizontal conch shell. According to local tradition, it was later renamed Hailing Island in memory of the Southern Song general Zhang Shijie (张世杰), said to be buried there. Stone tools and pottery shards found at the Hongkantou site (红坎头遗址) indicate habitation by the Neolithic period at the latest. From the Song dynasty it was a fishing and salt-producing area and a coastal military post; the market town of Zhapo (闸坡) opened in 1798 and grew into a major trading and fishing center.
The main island stretches 24 kilometers east-west and 8.5 kilometers north-south across 108.89 square kilometers, Guangdong's fourth-largest island, with seven hill peaks above 200 meters, the highest being Caowang Hill (草王山) at 385.4 meters. Besides Dajiao Bay, its other principal beach is Shili Silver Beach (十里银滩), about 400 hectares with a 10-kilometer shoreline and one of the largest sea-bathing beaches in China. The northeast holds the Hailing Island Mangrove National Wetland Park (海陵岛红树林国家湿地公园), with Guangdong's longest cross-sea wooden boardwalk, rated a national 3A scenic area in 2024.
