About Qingtian River
The Dan River gorge, Qingtian reservoir and surrounding slopes form the main landscape.
It belongs to the wider Yuntaishan geopark grouping. Its river-and-reservoir setting distinguishes it from the separate mountain sectors marketed under that wider name.
The reservoir within the scenic area was originally called Hongqi Reservoir (红旗水库). After the Dan River (丹河)'s flow increased on entering Bo'ai County, construction began in 1966 and finished in 1983, a 17-year project. The State Council listed Qingtian River Scenic Area among the sixth batch of National Key Scenic Areas (国家重点风景名胜区) in December 2005, and it was approved as a national 5A tourist attraction in May 2011.
Its landscape consists of gorges, the reservoir, springs, waterfalls and mountain vegetation. A 2016 master plan divided the area into eight touring zones, including Daquanhu, centred on the reservoir, and Guanyin Gorge and Foer Gorge, formed by Dan River tributary valleys and gorge terrain. The Yueshan Temple and Shifotan (石佛滩) zones contain cultural remains, and cliffside carvings in the Dan River gorge include Northern Wei images of Avalokitesvara and Sui-Tang figures at Shifotan.
Qingtian River lies within the Yuntaishan World Geopark (云台山世界地质公园); the Global Geoparks Network lists it with Yuntaishan (云台山), Qinglong Gorge (青龙峡), Fenglin Gorge (峰林峡) and Shennong Mountain (神农山) as component areas, and it is grouped with Yuntaishan and Shennong Mountain under the national 5A list. Its cliffside carvings, recorded as including 59 niches and Northern Wei inscriptions, were listed among the sixth batch of Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level (全国重点文物保护单位) in 2006.
