About Jiugong Mountain

Yunzhong Lake is the practical centre for a mountain stay, while Tonggubao offers broad ridge views and Shilong Gorge provides a contrasting descent into rock and forest. Clouds, sunrise and winter frost are weather-dependent experiences. The separate scenic areas require different transfers and walking commitments, so choose a lake-and-summit outing or a gorge route rather than treating the entire mountain as one short circuit.

According to the Taiping Yulan (太平御览), the mountain takes its name from nine palaces built here during the Southern and Northern Dynasties by Chen Bogong (陈伯恭), Prince of Jin'an, and his eight brothers, who were sheltering from war. In the Southern Song the Daoist Zhang Daoqing (张道清) established a place of worship on the mountain, and in 1187 built “three palaces and twelve courtyards” (三宫十二院) there to spread Daoism, making Jiugong Mountain one of the country's five major Daoist sites.

Jiugong Mountain is part of the Mufu Mountain range (幕阜山脉) in Tongshan County, near the border with Jiangxi province, about 28 kilometers in a straight line from the county seat. Its main peak rises to 1,656 meters, 182 meters higher than Lushan, with an average annual temperature of 22 degrees Celsius.

According to local tradition, the late-Ming rebel leader Li Zicheng died in battle on Jiugong Mountain. The King Chuang Mausoleum (闯王陵), associated with him, stands at the foot of Xiaoyue Mountain on the mountain's western side and includes a gate tower, tomb mound, sacrificial platform and exhibition hall; the Tongshan county tomb is a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level.
