About Yanbian Museum

The excavated-relics galleries introduce the region's earlier societies, while the folk-customs displays bring household and community traditions into focus. A separate farmers' dance exhibition provides a more specific introduction to a performing tradition associated with agricultural life. Pairing archaeology with customs makes a balanced visit and avoids reducing the region's identity to one period or one type of exhibit.

The museum's origins trace to a preparatory office (延边博物馆筹备处) established on 19 April 1960 to protect and manage Yanbian's cultural relics. It was abolished during the Cultural Revolution and turned into an exhibition hall, then restored afterward, and the Yanbian Museum was formally established in January 1973. In April 1982 a three-story building of 12,350 square meters opened at the confluence of the Yanji River (延吉河) and Buerhatong River (布尔哈通河).

In 2002 a new building was erected on the west side of Jindalai Plaza (金达莱广场) in Yanji to mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture. After the Yanbian Korean Revolutionary Memorial Museum (延边朝鲜族革命纪念馆) was approved for establishment in 2007, the institution began operating under three names with one staff. The museum was listed as a national second-class comprehensive museum in 2009. Its current building on Changbaishan West Road (长白山西路) began construction on 10 June 2010 and opened in September 2012.
