About Taierzhuang

Waterways, bridges and merchant-style streets recall its role on the Grand Canal, while surviving wartime remains keep the reconstruction grounded in a more difficult history. Boat-shaped Street makes the trading theme unusually literal in its sculptural buildings. Tianhou Palace adds the devotional world of merchants and boatmen to a visit that moves between water-town atmosphere and battle memory.

The settlement grew after 1604 (万历三十四年), during the Ming dynasty, when postal relay stations and offices were set up along this stretch of the Grand Canal to support its upkeep, and Tai'erzhuang became a regional trading hub. In 1647 (顺治四年) an earthen town wall was built along the canal, later narrowed as its west wall moved east, and in 1857 (咸丰七年) the wall was rebuilt in brick. The historic town was severely damaged during the 1938 Battle of Taierzhuang and was rebuilt between 2009 and 2013.

Tai'erzhuang District is the southernmost of five districts in the prefecture-level city of Zaozhuang, in southern Shandong, bordering Jiangsu province to the south. It covers an area of 538 square kilometers and had a population of about 290,000, though the 2020 census recorded a permanent population of 305,102.

The site of the 1938 battle (台儿庄大战旧址) has been listed as a national monument since 2006. Taierzhuang Ancient Town is rated a national 5A scenic spot and a nearby wetland park is rated 4A; in 2016 the district was named one of the first pilot National Comprehensive Tourism Demonstration Zones.

Getting to Taierzhuang

For the ancient-town visit, use the east gate on Dongshun Road, where the visitor entrance and ticket office form a clear road-arrival point. The surrounding district is larger than the enclosed scenic town, so specify the ancient-town gate when arranging transport.
