About Baodugu National Forest Park
Forest and exposed cliff give the park two distinct visual layers: shaded lower slopes followed by the more abrupt summit profile. Autumn foliage can change the colour of the mixed woodland, but the underlying attraction is the meeting of forest and rock. This is a mountain outing, with the higher paths requiring a separate decision about conditions and fitness.
The mountain lies in Shanting District, Zaozhuang, Shandong, about 25 kilometers southwest of the district seat, and reaches a height of 584 meters, the highest peak among the mountains of southern Shandong (鲁南群山). It was called Loushan (楼山) in the Han dynasty and Xiantaishan (仙台山) during the Wei and Jin dynasties, taking its present name only from the Tang and Song dynasties onward. In 1923, hostages taken in the Lincheng train robbery (临城劫车案) led by Sun Meiyao (孙美瑶) were held on the mountain, and a national forest park has since been established there.
What to look for
- The abrupt summit cliffs and the characteristic gu-shaped mountain profile.
- Mixed woodland on the slopes, with seasonal changes in foliage.
