About Langzhong
Courtyard compounds and historic institutions give the lanes their landmarks. Zhang Fei Temple introduces the town’s Three Kingdoms association, while the Chuanbei examination compound shows another part of its civic history. Choose the old-town core for the visit and distinguish its individual attractions from the much larger modern city.
Langzhong's old town, formerly known as Paoning, dates to the Tang dynasty and is counted among the best-preserved historic towns in China; its historic centre is home to about 30,000 residents. It was also once the seat of the former Anglican Diocese of Szechwan. In 1986 the State Council named it a famous historical and cultural town, and in 1991 its wider administrative area was upgraded to county-level city status under Nanchong.
The old town was laid out according to feng shui principles, with its military, trade and residential quarters each assigned to a location corresponding to a particular feng shui element, and the town positioned centrally with respect to four surrounding mountains, on the middle reaches of the Jialing River in the northern part of the Sichuan Basin.
Local Spring Festival temple fairs centre on the Zhang Fei Temple, continuing a worship tradition (张飞祭祀传统) with rituals dating to the Ming and Qing dynasties. During the Spring Festival Lantern Festival (春节灯会), red lanterns are hung and dragon and lion dances and stilt walking are performed. Northern Sichuan Lantern Opera (川北灯戏) and the weaving of Langzhong silk (阆中丝绸) are also counted among the area's traditional practices.
