About Tianjin Art Museum

Its stone-clad volume is cut by recesses and a large glazed entrance, while stepped interior spaces connect the galleries. The institution's collecting and exhibition program includes modern Chinese painting and Tianjin's artistic traditions. Choose the current exhibitions before visiting; works shown at the museum's opening in 2012 should not be assumed to remain on display. The architecture and neighboring cultural buildings also reward a short exterior circuit.

Construction of the museum's site began in February 2010, part of the wider Tianjin Cultural Center project that had started the previous September. A preparatory office was formally established in 2011, and the museum opened on 19 May 2012 with six exhibitions, including a display of works from the National Art Museum of China, alongside the other Cultural Center venues. The museum closed for about a month of renovation in mid-2019, reopening on 16 August 2019.

The building was designed by a German architecture firm (KSP尤根·恩格尔建筑师事务所) together with the Binhai branch of the Tianjin Architectural Design Institute, planned from 2008 and completed in 2012 at a cost of 430 million yuan. It covers a total floor area of 28,098 square meters on a 23,850-square-meter site, with about 9,000 square meters of exhibition space and a height of nearly 30 meters. A nearly 50-meter plaza walkway runs along its north side, and a glass curtain wall almost 15 meters high faces an artificial lake outside.

The museum's official website launched in December 2012, and it joined the Chinese Museum Association in 2014. In 2015, after digitizing 188 of its works into the national survey system for public art museum collections, it became the first provincial-level art museum in China to complete that survey.
