Tianjin Science and Technology Museum 天津科学技术馆

Tianjin Kexue Jishuguan

Tianjin Science and Technology Museum has a particularly distinctive astronomy component: its spherical theater uses a large dome and digital planetarium equipment to turn the ceiling into a simulated sky.

About Tianjin Science and Technology Museum

The cinema reopened after a digital upgrade in 2025, and the museum continued presenting astronomy programs in summer 2026. This makes a dome presentation a useful focus for a visit alongside the science displays. Select the actual program in advance; older film lists and proposed future galleries do not establish what is available today.

The museum was first built in 1992, with the phase-one project completed in September 1994. It formally opened to the public on New Year's Day, 1995. Its name was inscribed by Jiang Zemin, then General Secretary of the Communist Party's Central Committee and President of China, and the mathematician Chen Xingshen (陈省身) served as the museum's honorary director.

The permanent galleries extend beyond astronomy to everyday mechanics and basic physical science. Mechanical Ingenuity (机械之巧) explores mechanical transmission and its applications, while Exploration and Discovery (探索发现) brings mathematics, mechanics, acoustics and optics together through hands-on experimental models.

What to look for

  • The spherical theater building and its immersive dome screen.
  • Digital planetarium presentations that explain the night sky, when scheduled.
