About Tianjin Natural History Museum

Its scientific roots lie in Émile Licent's early-twentieth-century collecting journeys through the Yellow River and Haihe basins. Dinosaur mounts provide an immediate visual introduction, while later galleries compare evolutionary changes and ecological regions. Look closely at labels distinguishing original fossils from casts: both are used to explain animals whose skeletons are rarely found complete. The present museum is in the Cultural Center, distinct from the institution's older Machang Road premises.

The museum's origins trace to the Beijiang Museum (北疆博物院), founded in 1922. Its current building in the Cultural Center was originally designed for the Tianjin Museum by two Japanese design firms (高松伸建筑设计事务所 and 川口卫构造设计事务所); design work began in 2002, the building entered use in September 2004, and it won the China Construction Engineering Luban Prize in 2003.

The building's exterior imitates a swan, made up of a 'Swan Lake' (天鹅湖), a 'Swan Neck' (天鹅颈) corridor and a surrounding green belt likened to a necklace. The main structure has three floors and reaches a maximum height of 33 meters, with a ground plan in the shape of a semicircle 186 meters in diameter and a steel lattice-shell roof. On the second floor, the 5,700-square-meter 'Home, Life' (家园·生命) exhibition is divided into 'Ancient Homeland' and 'Modern Homeland' sections across eight units tracing the evolution of life, including displays of a woolly mammoth skeleton and Przewalski's horse fossils; the exhibition received an award in the 12th National Top Ten Museum Exhibitions competition.
