City & district guides
About Shigatse
Tashilhunpo gives the strongest introduction to the city's religious history, while the nearby shops show the everyday demand for devotional goods. This compact western part of the city is a more useful first outing than treating the entire Shigatse region as one destination. Excursions to Gyantse, Sakya and Everest belong to separate road journeys.
The city's earlier names, Nianqumai (年曲麦) and Nianmai (年麦), refer to the lower reaches of the Nianchu River (年楚河). It has long served as a religious, political, economic and cultural centre for the Tsang region (后藏) and as the traditional place of residence of the Panchen Lamas (班禅喇嘛). The city is designated a National Historical and Cultural City (国家历史文化名城). On 26 June 2014, the former prefecture was reorganised as a prefecture-level city, while the former county-level urban city became Samzhubze District (桑珠孜区), which houses the municipal government.
What to look for
- Tashilhunpo's monastery complex, the principal religious landmark in the city.
- The devotional-goods streets outside the monastery and the old-town setting beneath the fortress hill.
The surrounding area
A separate western urban centre anchored by Tashilhunpo, suitable for a considered extension from Lhasa.
Location & getting there
Getting to Shigatse
Use Tashilhunpo Monastery as the named arrival point for this city visit. Shigatse railway station lies south of the urban centre, so rail arrivals need an onward city transfer.
- Request central Shigatse/Samzhubze when arranging accommodation or transport; the wider municipality covers places far beyond the city.
