About Ili Prefecture Museum
The Boma tomb collection is particularly distinctive, including a gold mask set with red stones and richly decorated vessels. Other galleries connect the objects with the wider history and landscapes of Ili. The museum moved to its Ruyi Street building in 2021, so older Airport Road directions refer to its former home.
The museum was formally established in 1993. Its collection contained 6,565 objects or sets in 2024, including 387 classified as precious cultural relics. Stone tools, bronzes, pottery, jade, textiles and objects made from bone and wood broaden the collection beyond its gold and silver holdings. Steppe archaeology is represented by bronze objects and deer stones.
The historical displays cover the region from the pre-Qin period onward, while the natural-resources exhibition includes rare plant and wild-animal specimens. Temporary exhibitions draw on exchanges with other museums, and the institution also organises lectures and educational activities. It was rated a national 4A tourist attraction (国家AAAA级旅游景区) in 2022 and became a national second-grade museum (国家二级博物馆) in August 2024.
