About Tengchong

Dieshui River Waterfall brings a dramatic water feature close to the centre, while the National Martyrs Cemetery and Western Yunnan War of Resistance Memorial present the region’s wartime history. Laifengshan offers a wooded hill above the city. Choose these as a city-focused introduction, then reserve separate outings for Heshun, the volcano park or Rehai rather than assuming all of Tengchong’s attractions are neighbours.

The municipality lies on the western slopes of the Gaoligong Mountains (高黎贡山), where climate and vegetation change markedly with elevation. Habitats range from tropical monsoon conditions to alpine environments. The terrain has a horseshoe outline opening toward the south, and the urban centre stands at an elevation of 1,640 metres. The wider area contains 97 volcanic landforms.

Cross-border commerce was established by the early twentieth century, when trade between China and neighbouring Burma centred on the town. Work on a British consulate began in 1921 and was completed ten years later. Tengchong received designation as a Yunnan Provincial Historical and Cultural City (云南省历史文化名城) in 1987.

What to look for

  • Dieshui River Waterfall is a named natural sight close to the urban area.
  • The National Martyrs Cemetery and adjoining wartime memorial provide a substantial historical visit.

Background & history

Tengchong (Chinese: 腾冲; pinyin: Téngchōng) is a county-level city of Baoshan City, western Yunnan province, People's Republic of China. It is well known for its volcanic activity. The city is named after the town of Tengchong which serves as its political center, previously known as Tengyue (Chinese: 腾越; pinyin: Téngyuè) in Chinese. English language sources of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries use names such as Teng-Chung, Tingyueh, Teng Yueh, Momein and Momien. It borders with Myanmar in the northwest for 151 km (94 mi). By road, it is 650 km (400 mi) west of the provincial capital, Kunming, and 170 km (110 mi) westward from Baoshan's urban area. Tengchong marks the southwestern terminus of the Heihe–Tengchong Line, an imaginary line significant in geography that divides the area of China into two parts with contrasting population densities.
