About Former Residence of Lu Xun in Shaoxing

The former residence leads into the Baicao Garden setting, while Sanwei Study represents the disciplined schoolroom contrasted with that outdoor childhood world. The memorial museum adds biography and documentary material to the preserved and restored buildings. Read the domestic spaces through these specific literary connections rather than treating the area as a generic old street. The compound includes several managed venues, so follow the current entry sequence between them.

Lu Xun (鲁迅) was born here in 1881 and lived in the neighbourhood until he left in 1898. Preparations for the memorial museum began in 1949, and the museum opened in 1953. Extensive restoration and reconstruction preceded the area's reopening in 2008. The surrounding historic district includes both the writer's childhood home and the older family residence.

The ancestral residence occupies 2,400 square metres, while the childhood home covers 580 square metres and extends through six successive building ranges. The memorial museum stands between the two houses. In 1988, the ancestral home, former residence and Sanwei Study (三味书屋) were collectively listed as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level (全国重点文物保护单位). The area has held national 5A tourist-attraction status since 2012.

What to look for
