About Shen Garden
Its poem wall, ponds and Song-inspired pavilions frame the story remembered through the Chaitoufeng poems. Much of the present garden results from modern restoration and expansion, and the precise location of the original Song garden is disputed. Read the site as a carefully composed place of commemoration: the inscription is a later rendering of the poems, not an autograph left by Lu You.
The earliest securely documented owner of the present garden is Shen Youyuan (沈槱元), who had acquired it by 1738, when it was known as Ke Garden (柯园). He was not descended from the owners of the Song garden. The present site received Zhejiang Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit designation in 1963.
Archaeological work accompanied conservation and expansion in 1984 and 1992. The first investigation lasted a year and a half and established the sequence of deposits within a construction area of 7.2 mu (亩). The second examined 300 square metres over 57 days, uncovering remains that included an eastern enclosure wall, ponds and a watercourse.
