| Payment option | Where it fits your trip | What to compare before departure |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile payments | A useful option for everyday purchases where the merchant supports your app and linked card. | Supported cards, verification requirements, transaction restrictions and the charges shown by your app and card issuer. |
| Bank cards | Useful for bookings and merchants with a compatible card terminal. Check the card-network logo or ask before ordering. | Overseas transaction settings, issuer exchange-rate terms and whether your planned hotels or other larger suppliers accept the card. |
| Renminbi cash | A separate backup for times when your phone, connection or payment account is unavailable. | Access to a compatible ATM or exchange service, withdrawal limits and bank charges. Carry an amount you can manage securely. |
Separate prepaid costs from daily spending
List accommodation, intercity journeys and reserved attractions first. Then estimate meals, local transport and small purchases for each day. This makes your cash decision depend on the bookings already paid for, instead of one generic daily budget.
Compare the full cost of each method
Check your issuer's foreign-currency and cash-withdrawal terms alongside the payment app's current transaction notice. Compare like-for-like amounts in the same currency; a published fee example may not apply to your card, account or purchase.
Choose a backup that does not depend on the same failure
A second app on one phone still depends on that phone working. Consider a physical card and manageable cash reserve as part of your backup plan. Once you have chosen your methods, use the setup guide to prepare the accounts and test a small payment.
