About Shuijingxiang Market Street
Shuijingxiang Market Street (水井巷) is a market lane in Chengzhong District (城中区) of Xining (西宁), Qinghai; its name means "Water Well Lane". Since December 2024 it has also had Xiangzhongjing (巷中井), "the well in the lane", a three-level retro food and shopping hall at the market's north entrance.
The Chengzhong District government describes Xiangzhongjing as a conversion of the commercial floors of a former China Construction Bank shop-and-flat block on the west side of the market's north entrance. The work took eight months and gives about 5,600 m² of floor space, of which about 3,000 m² can be let to traders. The opening ceremony was set for 28 December 2024, and Qinghai Daily (青海日报) reported residents visiting the newly opened hall on 29 December. The plan keeps as many cultural symbols of the old Shuijingxiang market as it can.
Each floor has its own use. The basement sells Qinghai specialty products, the middle floor gathers popular traditional snacks, and the upper floor holds mid-sized restaurants and branded chains. The building has been refitted in a deliberately aged retro style, with staggered shop signs reviving names that local people remember, such as Xining Restaurant (西宁饭庄), Ximenkou Dumpling House (西门口饺子馆) and the Liu Hulan store (刘胡兰商场), alongside old-style grocery, cinema and photo studio settings.
