About Fuping Ceramic Art Village

A Guangming Daily feature carried by Xinhua describes the village as a cluster of buildings of varied form standing among dense planting and rows of fruit trees, and singles out the ceramic art halls named for different countries as its distinguishing feature and as a platform built for world ceramic-art exchange. It records that Fuping is rich in the clay that is the basic material for ceramics, and that the village began as a county-run brickworks which a farmer-entrepreneur, Xu Dufeng, took over in a restructuring in the 1990s. Fu Qiang, a 1982 graduate of the Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts who had run a small folk-art exhibition room, shared Xu Dufeng's ideas about the future of ceramic culture and started building the village in 1997.

The collection and the exchange are the point. The same feature records that the village holds 40,000 contemporary works from more than a hundred countries, with artists coming in national groups to work and exchange ideas, and that the design of its main hall was inspired by sliced radish – overlapping rings stacked one on another to make a space with the atmosphere of a church. It also describes the village's work in combining northern Chinese steamed-flower-bun shapes with ceramics, so that a perishable dough art is fixed in fired clay.

A course page from the Center for Language Education and Cooperation places the Fule International Ceramic Art Museums in the ceramic art village in Fuping County and describes the group as China's first modern ceramic art museum, with northern Chinese kiln-style buildings holding modern ceramic works of differing cultural concepts and artistic styles.
