About Han Yangling Museum
Hanyangling is the joint mausoleum of Liu Qi, Emperor Jing of Han, and Empress Wang, buried in separate chambers within one precinct. Work began in 153 BC and finished in 126 BC, a span of 28 years, and the precinct covers 20 square kilometres. Emperor Jing, who lived from 188 to 141 BC, was the fourth emperor of the Western Han and reigned for 17 years; the provincial entry credits him and his father Emperor Wen with opening the period later praised as the Rule of Wen and Jing. More than forty years of survey and excavation have established that the site comprises the emperor's mausoleum precinct, the empress's precinct, southern and northern burial-pit areas, ritual buildings, a satellite tomb park, a convict cemetery and the Yangling town.
The emperor's precinct is square and faces east, with 81 burial pits radiating around the tumulus. The spirit road outside its eastern gate runs 900 metres to a Sima road 110 metres wide, which continues east to the Yangling town 5 kilometres away, and more than 10,000 satellite tombs of nobles and officials are ranged along both sides of it. More than 200 burial pits in the mausoleum area have yielded armoured warrior figures, court-lady figures in loose robes and very large numbers of animal figures. The provincial entry calls Hanyangling the most completely preserved Han imperial mausoleum precinct found to date. The museum is a national first-grade museum, a national archaeological site park and a national AAAA tourist scenic area, and has four permanent displays showing more than 10,000 objects.
