About Qingdao International Sailing Centre

Built for the 2008 Olympic and Paralympic sailing events, it combines sheltered marina water, quays and long breakwaters. Lovers Dam extends toward a white lighthouse, giving a broad view back across the boats to the city. The public waterfront offers an accessible way to understand the venue’s scale without joining a sailing trip or entering areas reserved for sport and harbour operations.

Construction of the sailing centre began in 2004 and the venue was completed in 2006, when it hosted its first international event, the 2006 Qingdao International Regatta, as part of the Good Luck Beijing test-event series. During the 2008 Summer Olympics the venue held eleven events across nine windsurfing, dinghy, skiff and keelboat classes with 400 competitors, and the following Paralympics saw 80 competitors race across three keelboat classes.

The Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center covers 45 hectares in total, comprising a 30-hectare competition area and a 15-hectare area set aside for development after the Games. The site also contains Yandaoshan Park, the Olympic Sailing Museum and the Qingdao International Conference Center.

Since the 2008 Games the centre has served as a stopover port for the Volvo Ocean Race, including the 2008-09 edition, and for the Clipper Round the World Race in every season since 2005-06. It has also hosted sailing world championships and World Cup events, among them the 2025 ILCA 7 and ILCA 6 World Championships and several Sailing World Cup events during the 2010s.
