Setting and landscape
The district's 12.38 kilometres of shore curve around five bays, from west to east Tuandao, Qingdao, Huiquan (汇泉), Taiping (太平) and Fushan (浮山) bays, with capes between them. The highest hill is Mount Fushan at 384 metres; the others, such as Signal Hill (信号山) at 99 metres, stay under 200. The whole seafront lies inside the Qingdao Seashore Scenic Area, one of the first national scenic areas listed by the State Council in 1982.
History
In 1388 the Ming built the Fushan garrison post (浮山所) in what is now the east of the district, and villages such as Upper and Lower Qingdao were founded. In 1578 Jimo (即墨) county was allowed to open Qingdao harbour, in front of the Tianhou Temple (天后宫) east of the pier, to sea trade. After the Qing decided in 1891 to fortify the bay, general Zhang Gaoyuan (章高元) arrived in 1892 and built a headquarters, barracks and a jetty. Germany seized Qingdao in 1897, and its 1900 town plan set aside a villa and sanatorium quarter and sea-bathing beaches. Shinan first appeared as a district name in 1946.
What to see
Zhanqiao pier (栈桥) began as the Qing military jetty and was completed only in 1899. Its southern section was rebuilt in reinforced concrete from 1931 and finished in 1933, with the octagonal two-storey Huilan Pavilion (回澜阁) on an artificial island at the end; the whole structure is 390.5 metres long. East of the pier are the Chinese Navy Museum (中国海军博物馆) and Little Qingdao (小青岛), an islet 720 metres offshore that became a park in 1987.
Badaguan, between Taiping and Huiquan capes, was built in the 1930s along streets named after ancient Chinese military passes, and its early modern buildings became a national key protected site in 2001. Each street has its own trees: flowering peach on Shaoguan Road (韶关路), crape myrtle on Zhengyangguan Road (正阳关路). The Huashi Villa (花石楼), built of variously finished stone, faces the sea with the Second Bathing Beach to one side.
Xiaoyushan (小鱼山) rises on the north shore of Huiquan Bay. The district government also lists the Jiao'ao Governor's Residence (胶澳总督楼), St Michael's Cathedral (圣弥厄尔教堂) and the former homes of Kang Youwei, Lao She and Shen Congwen. The Olympic Sailing Centre (奥帆中心) on Fushan Bay, built on a former shipyard, was the 2008 Olympic sailing venue.
