About Changdao Islands
The two main islands are joined by a bridge, but reaching them from the mainland still involves a sea crossing. On North Changshan, Jiuzhang Cliff presents steep sea-cut rock faces, while nearby Crescent Bay is known for its rounded pebbles. These contrasting shores explain the islands’ appeal more clearly than trying to visit every outlying island in one trip.
The archipelago is also known as the Miaodao Islands (庙岛群岛) or Changshan Islands (长山列岛), and was anciently called Shamen Island (沙门岛). It formed from the subsidence of an ancient mountain range. The islands were originally administered by Changdao County; when the county was abolished on 22 June 2020 and merged into Penglai District, administration passed to the Changdao Marine Ecological Civilization Comprehensive Experimental Zone (长岛海洋生态文明综合试验区).
The archipelago lies in the Bohai Strait (渤海海峡), where the Bohai Sea (渤海) meets the Yellow Sea (黄海), between the Jiaodong (胶东半岛) and Liaodong (辽东半岛) peninsulas. It comprises 151 islands with a total land area of about 56 square kilometers, a sea area of 8,700 square kilometers and a coastline 146 kilometers long. The islands hold the Changdao National Nature Reserve (长岛国家级自然保护区), the Miaodao Islands Provincial Marine Nature Reserve (庙岛群岛省级海洋自然保护区) and the Miaodao Islands Provincial Spotted Seal Nature Reserve (庙岛群岛省级斑海豹自然保护区), and the Xianjingyuan Scenic Area (仙境源风景区) is rated a national AA-level scenic area.
