About Old City Wall
Dajing Tower is the most visible feature of the remaining ensemble.
The scale is deliberately modest compared with the extensive walls of other Chinese cities. Its value is as evidence of where old Shanghai’s enclosed core once ended. Read the masonry, tower and surrounding street alignment together, then compare the site with another old-city landmark. Access to the tower or small interpretation spaces should be checked separately from viewing the exterior.
What to look for
- A short wall section survives within the modern street network.
- Dajing Tower gives the surviving defensive fragment an architectural focus.
