About Shanghai Metro Museum

It explains the railway system through models, operating displays and full-size simulated environments.

The First Line Hall links the museum to the beginnings of Shanghai’s metro, while a mock tunnel and driving simulator show different aspects of railway operation. These are interpretive exhibits rather than access to an operating railway. Check the current museum programme, particularly after refurbishment, and follow staff instructions for interactive activities.

A refurbishment carried out from February to July 2026 added two full-size rolling-stock mock-ups, numbered 21A01 and 22A01, and since then a partially scrapped car, 01A01 (fleet number 94071), has been preserved outside the museum. The museum holds more than sixty items and continues collecting items from the public to broaden its account of the Shanghai Metro's past, present and future.

Displays include a diorama showing Line 1 crossing above Line 2, with a model of empty shoes commemorating metro fatalities that occurred before platform screen doors were installed, alongside a driving simulator, a 5D cinema built around a train-fire safety scenario, and a walk-through mock subway tunnel with glass flooring over mock rails and a small model of a tunnel boring machine.
